Dolly Parton Laid to Rest in Private Funeral, Great Niece Reveals

The country music icon's passing has left an outpouring of grief across the entertainment world. Amid the mourning, those closest to her are beginning to share personal glimpses of the woman behind the legend.

Dolly Parton was laid to rest on Friday, August 28, following a private funeral attended only by immediate family. The beloved singer died just days earlier, on August 25, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80.

Her niece, Lainey Parton, confirmed the burial in an emotional social media tribute shared on Saturday, August 29. "This is a really hard post for me to make. I wanted to wait until after my granny was laid to rest yesterday before I tried to put any of this into words," Lainey began.

"From the time I was little, my granny always had a way of making me feel like I was enough. She never made my dreams feel too big or made me feel like I couldn't do something. She believed in me before I even knew how to believe in myself," she wrote.

She continued, "Most people can think of at least one bad memory with everyone in their family. I honestly can't think of one with her. Because she couldn't have kids of her own, she always made us feel like we were hers. She loved us that way, and I'll forever be grateful for that."

Lainey went on to share that one memory of Dolly she will always cherish is how the "9 to 5" singer made her feel after inviting her to sing on the 2024 family collaborative album "Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables album."

"I was a freshman in high school and SO nervous. But she had a way of making me feel like nothing bad could happen. She made me feel safe, confident, and like I belonged right there beside her," Lainey recalled.

"As I got older, she continued to believe in me. When I told her I wanted to go to beauty school, she never questioned why I wasn't going to college. She told me she couldn't see me doing anything else," she said.

Lainey revealed that Dolly financially supported her through school and helped launch her career. She expressed gratitude for having said "yes" to the opportunities Dolly gave her, including the memories the pair created while sharing the screen together in a film.

"I'm so glad I have those moments to look back on now. I have things I can watch, hear, and hold onto when I miss her," Lainey wrote.

"It still doesn't feel real that she's gone. I'm going to miss her voice, her laugh, her hugs, and just knowing she was there. I'm even going to miss those 4 AM calls, and I'd give anything to see her name pop up on my phone again," she said.

Lainey also thanked everyone who had reached out to her, whether through messages, flowers sent to her home, or other small gestures of support. She noted that she had taken note of each one, and that they meant more to her than people might realize.

"I feel incredibly lucky that I got to call her my granny," she said of Dolly. "Thank you for always believing in me, loving me, and making me feel like I could do anything. I love you, Granny. Always. 🤍 ."

Dolly's nephew, Bryan Seaver, was the first to announce her passing, in an Instagram video. In a statement to People, representatives for Dolly confirmed her death followed a "brief battle with cancer." The specific type of cancer was not disclosed.

The singer had been admitted to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville on Friday, August 21, and died four days later. She had also been dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues prior to her death.
