Shania Twain on Her Secret to a Happy Marriage With Frédéric Thiébaud

Jul 31, 2026 - 08:00 P.M.

After years in the spotlight and one very public heartbreak, Shania Twain says she's landed exactly where she's meant to be. The "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" singer is crediting her husband with giving her a love story worth waiting for.

Shania Twain is in love, and she's making no effort to hide it. The country music icon, married to Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud for 15 years, recently shared that she believes she's found her happy ending with him by her side.

The couple's romance began in 2009, and by December 2010 they were engaged. Just weeks later, on New Year's Day 2011, they exchanged vows in an intimate sunset ceremony in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Now, more than a decade into their marriage, Twain is reflecting on what's kept their connection so strong. "This is the love I'm going to grow old with," the singer, 60, said in a recent interview. "And it's a beautiful feeling."

According to Twain, their relationship has grown into something that runs much deeper than romantic affection alone.

"I'm sure we'll always have romance, but there's a depth and a gratitude that I have about having this love," she explained. "And if I [had] met Fred as a teenager, I do believe that he would have been my lifelong love even from then. It just takes sometimes years to find that person."

Much of the marriage's staying power, Twain says, comes down to Thiébaud, 55, and his approach to communication. "He's really good at reminding both of us that we have to keep communication open," she said.

"He's the greatest talker, and he's not inhibited at all with expressing his feelings, which is really wonderful in a man. If you have a man that is really open and wants to keep the communication open, you're blessed as a woman."

Still, even a strong partnership has its friction points. Twain describes herself as "a good communicator," but admitted she tends to process conflict differently than her husband, often preferring to meditate, take a walk, or sit alone with her guitar whenever a "marital issue" comes up.

Thiébaud takes the opposite approach, choosing to confront problems directly rather than let them linger. "Fred wants to talk about it. He wants to talk it through, and he wants to fix it," Twain explained. "And that's the best advice. I mean, he's not wrong."

The "Still the One" hitmaker and the former Nestlé executive found each other under complicated circumstances.

Their romance blossomed after Twain's split from ex-husband Robert "Mutt" Lange, who had allegedly been involved with Thiébaud's then-wife, Marie-Anne — once one of Twain's closest friends.

Twain and Lange share a 25-year-old son, Eja, whom they've continued to co-parent since their divorce. Looking back in 2022, Twain spoke candidly about healing from that chapter of her life.

"I found peace a long time ago, and maybe peace is forgiveness, you know?" she reflected.

"I'm able to have more appreciation for him again, not for what happened in our marriage but for all that he contributed to such a great part of my career and my life. We have a beautiful child from it. The resentment is gone."

In place of that resentment now sits her love for Thiébaud. Twain admitted that after her divorce, she'd sworn off marriage entirely — until he entered the picture.

"When I got divorced I said, 'I'm never getting married again,'" she recalled. "I was definitely one of those people that could have written a million songs about, 'I'm never going to fall in love again.' But Fred was such an undeniable love."
