Dolly Parton Posthumously Accepts Lifetime Achievement — Video

The surprise moment closed out a night already charged with emotion, as fellow artists gathered to honor a career that helped shape modern Americana music. Few in the room knew Parton's voice — and her gratitude — would fill the hall one final time.

Dolly Parton has posthumously accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th Annual Americana Honors & Awards, held this past Wednesday evening, September 16, in Nashville, Tennessee.

The beloved "Jolene" singer had recorded an acceptance speech video prior to her death in August.

The footage was preceded by an introduction from Emmylou Harris, and followed by a tribute performance from Brandi Carlile and the supergroup trio I'm With Her — Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O'Donovan, and Sara Watkins — performing one of Parton's most personal signature songs, the autobiographical "Coat of Many Colors."

"Well, hey, it's Dolly, and I am so honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association," Parton begins in the clip. "I mean, roots music, or what is now called Americana music, is what I grew up playing back in the Smoky Mountains."

"It's that same music that drew me back to East Tennessee back in 1997 to write and record my album 'Hungry Again,'" she continued. "And that project really opened the door to a series of bluegrass and acoustic albums that changed the course of my career in so many ways."

She went on, "Now, new fans discovered these albums, new Americana music communities embraced them, and now, looking back at it all, I see this era of my career as a musical renaissance of sorts."

"And I want to thank everybody at the AMA for recognizing me with this award. It's a great honor, truly. And just know that I will always love you," Parton concluded.

News of Parton receiving the lifetime achievement award had broken only this month, though the honor was clearly long in the works. Still, the existence of the acceptance speech caught the audience off guard, as did the musical performance that followed it.

In her introductory remarks, Harris — who joined Parton on the hit album "Trio," alongside Linda Ronstadt — reflected on her longtime friend's legacy.

"Just a few weeks ago, something utterly unthinkable happened: Dolly Parton left our world. But over her time here, this tiny, extraordinary woman made it a better, brighter and kinder place," Harris told the crowd.

Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at age 80. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, was the first to share the news, in an emotional video message.

Hours later, her team confirmed in a follow-up statement that the "9 to 5" singer's death followed a "brief battle with cancer." The specific type of cancer was not disclosed. She was laid to rest days later in a private burial attended only by family.

Parton had been admitted to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville on August 21 and died four days later. In health updates and interviews throughout the past year, the singer had revealed she was managing kidney and autoimmune issues before her death.

The same day she was admitted, Parton acknowledged her declining health. "As I've shared in video messages throughout the past year, I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn't pay attention to when I was watching over [my husband] Carl," she said.

Even so, she remained determined to keep working.

"Even though I'm still healin', I'm still workin'! You know me — as I've often said — I've dreamed myself into a corner and I still have so many things I want to achieve, so I'm gonna keep on working as long as I can to see everything come to life," she declared.
