How Sandra Bullock and Her Kids Navigated Her Partner Bryan Randall’s ALS Diagnosis

The Oscar winner detailed how she quietly managed a private ALS diagnosis for years while honoring Randall's request for secrecy. The revelation marks the first time she has spoken publicly about the ordeal since his 2023 death.

Sandra Bullock is opening up for the first time about the loss of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall. The photographer passed away in 2023 following a three-year private battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 57.

Bullock appeared on an episode of "SmartLess" with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes, where she reflected on the "traumatic diagnosis" that led to Randall's death. She revealed that her partner had asked her not to share his diagnosis publicly.

"I wasn't allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried — I honored it," Bullock explained. "I know why he asked me not [to]." Still, she felt isolated while carrying the "huge weight" of his diagnosis, especially amid the global COVID-19 pandemic.

"I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed," Bullock continued, noting he was ill for half of their relationship. "My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don't think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you're just on this treadmill, you know?"

Reflecting on Randall's symptoms, she described ALS as "the process of elimination over the course of a year. And some where you keep going back and they give you all these milestones, these things to do, these grips, these breath tests, all these things."

"You have to quietly plan. And I'm a very good planner with illness," she went on, drawing on her past experience with her father's "accidents" and her mother's cancer battle.

"It doesn't scare me — not the illness itself, it doesn't scare me," the actress added. "I can see and be around just about anything. But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Randall] as a father figure."

"When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things — and it's something that people don't talk about… it was a trifecta that was pretty dark," she shared.

Bullock and Randall co-parented her son Louis and daughter Laila, as well as Randall's daughter from a previous relationship, Skylar Staten Randall. She noted that her son responded very differently than his sister did to watching his mother care for Randall.

"About two years before Bryan passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn't healthy for him to be around," the Oscar winner said.

"He chose to just be there and support and help me on the things that were easy for [him]. But he smartly disengaged himself and said, 'This is a safer space for me to sit.' And I said, 'Absolutely. You go, I got this.'"

Beyond her son's "very evolved" approach, Bullock stressed that she didn't want him forced to "become the man of the family at that age." "My job is to be both at that time," she explained. "And I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already [expletive] anyway and people are suffering everywhere."

Meanwhile, the "Miss Congeniality" star said her daughter remained "more bonded until about six months out" from Randall's death.

"Then she says, 'Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?'" Bullock recalled. "And I said, 'Absolutely, but if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.'"

Bullock said her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the only person who knew about Randall's diagnosis "for a while." Eventually, she confided in friends including Jennifer Aniston and Bateman's wife, Amanda Anka, sharing a tear-filled moment with them.

Looking back on that release, she admitted, "It was relief."
